Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong wrote the band’s first song “Why Do You Want Him?”, when he was only 14 (appears on the ‘1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours’ album).
The band was renamed from their previous name The Sweet Children, after their first semi-successful song.
Released their first album ‘1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours’, a compilation album featuring singles from their earlier EPs, “1,000 Hours”, “39/ Smooth”, and “Slappy”, hence the peculiar name. [1990]

Their lesser known hits include “J.A.R.,” “Stuck with Me,” “Walking Contradiction,” “Redundant,” “Last Ride In,” “Warning,” “Macy’s Day Parade,” “Maria,” and “Poprocks & Coke”.
Scored 7 wins (out of 8 nominations) at the 2005 MTV Video Music Awards in Miami: Best Video for “Boulevard of Broken Dreams”, Best Group Video, Best Rock Video, Best Direction, Editing and Cinematography in a Video, Viewer`s Choice Award for “American Idiot”.
In some songs, the lyrics don’t include the title’s name. For example, in “Basket Case”, the phrase “basket case” is not in the lyrics.
In their song “Jesus Of Suburbia”, there is absolutely no chorus. Kelli Garner appeared as “the girlfriend” in the video.
Won 2 MTV European Music Awards in 2005 for “Best Rock” and “Best Album” (“American Idiot”).
They came up with their name in honor of a day-long weed binge.
Lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong wrote the song ‘Wake Me Up When September Ends’ about his father’s death when he was a young child and how he dealt with it then and deals with it now.
Won Kids’ Choice 2006 award for Favorite Music Group, while their song “Wake Me Up When September Ends” won the award for Favorite Song
