The singer closed out Radio 1’s Live Lounge Month with an extended performance.

Sam Smith closed out BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge Month on Friday (Sept. 29) with an extended performance that included covers of Alicia Keys’ “Try Sleeping With a Broken Heart” and George Michael’s “Father Figure.”

Celebrating 50 years of Radio 1, Smith introduced his rendition of “Father Figure” by saying he wanted to pick his “favorite artist of all time. And that is the incredible George Michael.”

During the impassioned performance of the late pop icon, he also segued into a bridge from Micheal’s classic “Faith,” during which he encouraged the audience to clap along, saying, “Come on Radio 1 — let’s celebrate George right now.”

Michael passed away Dec. 25, 2016, from natural causes.

Smith also delivered his new single, “Too Good at Goodbyes,” as well as “Stay With Me,” “Lay Me Down,” “I’m Not the Only One,” “Leave Your Lover” and his Disclosure collaboration, “Latch,” NME reports.
